Political Stalemate in Israel Forces Unprecedented Re-Elections

I watched as the news broke late last week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was unable to form his government coalition by his midnight deadline last Wednesday.

After rising victoriously out of a heated, difficult election season to serve a record fifth term, parliament voted to dissolve – a first time event in the history of Israel.

As a supporter of Israel and the Jewish people, it was difficult to watch Prime Minister Netanyahu’s efforts to build his long-expected coalition being thwarted by his own allies.

This isn’t a time for factions. More than ever, I believe Israel and all of us need to come and stand together in unity.

Avigdor Lieberman, the Yisrael Beiteinu party leader, and the ultra-Orthodox parties refused to budge or compromise on a bill to prevent the political stalemate, thus crippling Netanyahu’s ability to form the government in time.

The bill at the center of the controversy would require ultra-Orthodox men studying the Torah to serve in Israel’s military. Currently, they are exempted. The ultra-Orthodox parties are opposed to the proposal and wanted Netanyahu to modify it.

But Lieberman has argued strongly that every Israeli should share in military service. And he refused to join Netanyahu’s coalition government unless the bill stayed in its current form.

With both parties refusing to accommodate the potential to find a middle ground, and because both are needed to form the coalition, Netanyahu was stuck.

What Happens Next?

Voters will return to the polls for a re-election on September 17. The winner will then attempt to rally the parties again to form a government. It’s estimated that an Israeli government won’t be set until sometime in November.

President Trump, a friend and ally of Prime Minister Netanyahu, Israel and the Jewish people, tweeted his encouragement:

Hoping things will work out with Israel's coalition formation and Bibi and I can continue to make the alliance between America and Israel stronger than ever. A lot more to do!

Potential Implications

It’s unclear how this unprecedented development could impact the long-awaited Middle East Peace plan set to be released by the President late next month in Bahrain.

And while the polls currently predict that Netanyahu and his Likud party will again win in September, we must be vigilant to pray during this time of political chaos and uncertainty.

We know that God is always in control of all outcomes. His knowledge and wisdom are beyond anything we can humanly comprehend.

And we believe He will always support, defend and provide for His Chosen People. That’s the core motivation and foundation of our own commitment to stand with Israel and support the Jewish people throughout the world.

Stand with Israel in Prayer

As unprecedented as a re-election may be to all of us, God is not surprised. And we can take comfort and hope that His divine will – whatever it may be – will ultimately prevail.

We’ll be praying for Israel during this time of political uncertainty. Please pray with us for God to:

  • Provide peace and protection to Israel and her people during this time of uncertainty
  • Give strength, wisdom and clarity to Israeli leaders throughout the entire re-election cycle
  • Raise up the leader and government coalition He desires to bring His will to fruition in Israel and around the world
  • Move in the hearts and minds of the Jewish people to help them see the truth that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Messiah
